Hello, friends. I’m so happy to be here today at Water Cooler Wednesday for the Nice Girls Writing Naughty blog. Each week, on “hump day,” one of us Nice Girls shares a little bit about her life. Though I try to make my stories exciting, my real life is pretty quiet. One thing that keeps me hopping is my pets. I have one dog and several cats. They each have their own personality, and each one has a story. Today I’d like to share the story of Blackberry, my sweet, shy black bob-tailed cat.
I don’t even remember what I was looking for that day I went into the hardware store. I certainly wasn’t looking for a cat! I already had several at home and was *not* looking to add to my “crazy cat lady” persona. But a local cat rescue organization was having an adoption day and had brought some of the cats and kittens who needed homes.
I wasn’t about to adopt anyone, I promise. Really! But it couldn’t hurt just to look at those cute little kittens and nice big cats, could it? I got talking pets with some of the women there and started playing with a feisty orange kitten. He was cute, and I was tempted, but then I noticed a small black cat curled up in a cage. It lay still, as though it didn’t want anyone to notice it.
There was a sign on the cage, saying that this cat was being picked on by others at the shelter (really a big house where cats are allowed to roam and do their own thing). This poor little kitty was being bullied and I could tell from the way she acted that it had affected her. When I picked her up and held her she hardly moved. She was so shy and fearful, but not mean at all. I knew if I brought anyone home, it would have to be her.
I guess you can tell where this story’s going, right? Yep, I brought my little Blackberry home with me. It took her a while to come out of her shell and though she’s still a bit shy, she’s very loveable and enjoys being petted and sitting on my lap.
And that, my friends, is how I got that cat.
And guess what? She makes an appearance in my new adult romance No Promises. The heroine, Sam, and her Dad own a bob tailed cat named Blackberry. That Blackberry is modeled after the real one, her namesake. I wanted to do something special for my little friend who’d had such a hard past.
Can her love save him?
Samantha Pennywell had a massive crush on Rick Russo in high school, but he was her cousin’s boyfriend and strictly off limits. When she meets him again years later, it doesn’t take her long to realize her feelings haven’t changed.
But Rick has changed. He’s not the guy Sam remembers. A tragic event has shattered his confidence, shaken his beliefs and left him rudderless. He can’t make Sam any promises of love. Promises are too easily broken.
Sam spends her life caring for sick and homeless animals. She’s never met a stray she didn’t love. But her love may not be enough to save Rick from himself.
